At least 22 people, including two policemen, were injured and 100 people were arrested in a riot at a London soccer match, resulting in sports officials warning that English clubs’ hopes of playing in Europe again may be ruined. The violence erupted after the London team Chelsea was defeated by Middlesbrough in a playoff match. Furious Chelsea fans smashed through a security barrier at the end of the match and stormed the field, hurling stones and bottles at visiting fans. English teams have been banned since 1985 from participating in European tournaments because of rioting at the European Cup Final in Brussels that killed 39 people.
