South El Monte : Mayor’s Appointment OKd

Share

The City Council has decided to go ahead with a proposal to return the post of mayor to an appointed position, rather than keeping it an elected one, according to City Clerk Margaret Garcia. If the council formally approves the idea in July, as expected, voters would decide the issue in November.

The mayor’s post was rotated among council members until 1980, when voters made it an elective office. But those who have held the elective post since then have complained about the two-year terms, saying they spend much of their time campaigning for the next election.

If voters decide to return to the appointive system, Garcia said, the mayoral and vice mayoral jobs would probably again be rotated among council members.
