Bus fares are going up, but a man identified by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies as Samuel Sandoval, 26, apparently decided he knew how to beat that.

Sandoval, an RTD spokesman said, saw a bus sitting driverless at a layover station, at 6th Street and Central Avenue, and climbed in.

Minutes later, a sheriff’s helicopter pilot spotted the bus traveling south on the Santa Ana Freeway. Patrol cars fell in behind it as it turned off onto Norwalk Boulevard. Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Gutierrez said the bus smashed through a railroad crossing arm at Los Nietos Road and was nearly struck by a southbound train.

Deputies managed to bring it to a halt. Sandoval surrendered.

It was not clear were he was headed at the time.
