Share

A reputed gang member was convicted Thursday of assault with a deadly weapon in the Feb. 15 shooting of a Crenshaw-area resident who was trying to keep drug dealers from storing their drugs in the broken-down cars behind his apartment.

Michael Campbell, a father of four who had recently moved to Los Angeles, was seriously wounded when he was shot in the abdomen.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury deliberated five days before acquitting Kenneth Madden, 24, of attempted murder while finding him guilty of the lesser charge. Madden faces a maximum of 12 years in prison when he is sentenced June 23, Deputy Dist. Atty. Karen Filipi said.

Campbell, who is deaf, has had surgery to remove the bullet from his abdomen and remains in pain from his injuries, the prosecutor said. During the four-day trial, Madden’s attorney argued that his client shot Campbell in self-defense.
