Tilden Could Still Pick Spots Against Budge
Bob Oates’ article (May 29) on “The Best Ever?” in tennis stopped just short of the answer. Don Budge, 26, toured with Bill Tilden, 48, in 1941 because Tilden, not Budge, was still the top draw in tennis.
Yes, Budge did win more matches on this tour than Tilden, but Tilden won in all the major cities in the United States, including the opening match at Madison Square Garden, which was like winning Wimbledon on this tour.
Not bad for a 48-year-old against a 26-year-old at his peak.
