The official Soviet newspaper Izvestia accused Afghan rebels of murdering three injured Soviet prisoners who had been captured during an attack on a convoy pulling out of the city of Kandahar. The three were among a group of Soviet soldiers protecting the convoy as it set out for Kabul, the Afghan capital, early last week, Izvestia said. The rebels began a fierce attack near the village of Dila, the newspaper added. It said that rebels who had been captured in the fighting told Soviet officials about the three injured soldiers’ deaths.
