Former President Gerald R. Ford implicitly suggested that Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III consider resigning, the Washington Post reported. Asked at a National Press Club luncheon what advice he might have for the embattled attorney general, Ford said: “I strongly believe that when a person in the Cabinet or a comparable position is challenged on his integrity . . . if his staying in office undercuts the presidency . . . he should walk into the Oval Office and offer his resignation.” Independent counsel James C. McKay has been investigating Meese on conflict-of-interest charges.
