All three major presidential candidates--Vice President Bush, Massachusetts Gov. Dukakis and the Rev. Jackson--were surprise guests Tuesday morning at the opening of ABC-TV’s annual affiliates meeting at the Century Plaza. On the day of the California primary, the three were grilled on a variety of issues by ABC newsmen George Will, David Brinkley, Peter Jennings and Sam Donaldson. When Donaldson, known for his blunt treatment of politicians, directed some pointed questions at Bush about his professed ignorance in the Iran-Contra affair, the vice president, recalling a celebrated clash, quipped: “If I’d wanted to visit with Dan Rather, I’d be over at CBS.”
