Fireworks were expected to erupt on the field at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night, but for once Yankee Manager Billy Martin was not the source. His players were.

Rickey Henderson hit a run-scoring single and started a sensational double play in the eighth inning as New York beat the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, hours after baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth ended a feud between Martin and umpires.

Martin, who stayed off the field Monday night under threat of ejection, left the dugout twice in the first inning without incident.

Henderson protected New York’s one-run lead in the eighth when, with Ellis Burks on third and one out, Mike Greenwell hit a soft liner to left field. Henderson dashed toward left-center, backhanded the ball at his feet and recovered for a perfect throw to catch Burks, who had tagged up and was racing for home.

Charles Hudson (5-2) overcame Boston’s three-run first inning, and Cecilio Guante finished for his sixth save.

Henderson’s infield single capped a four-run second inning against Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (5-5). Jack Clark and Mike Pagliarulo singled, and Jose Cruz’s one-out forceout scored a run. After Rafael Santana singled, Skinner hit a two-run double, Boyd balked and Henderson beat out a single.

Kansas City 6, Oakland 0--Ted Power scattered nine hits, and George Brett and Danny Tartabull homered on consecutive pitches as the Royals defeated the Athletics at Kansas City, Mo.

The Royals, who shut out the A’s Monday night, won their sixth straight game, and Oakland lost its third straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season.

Oakland left 11 runners on base.

Power (3-1) walked 5 and struck out 4 in pitching his second consecutive shutout. He had blanked the Seattle Mariners on 4 hits in his previous start.

Chicago 10, Minnesota 8--Harold Baines’ homer and Mike Woodard’s two-run triple highlighted a seven-run seventh inning to propel the White Sox to victory at Chicago.

Baines hit the first pitch off reliever Keith Atherton (4-3) for his seventh homer. Dan Pasqua, who had homered earlier, hit a run-scoring single to put Chicago ahead, 5-4. Ozzie Guillen had a two-run single, Woodard tripled in two more and Gary Redus hit a sacrifice fly as the White Sox enjoyed their biggest inning of the season.

Ricky Horton (4-6), the second of three Chicago pitchers, worked 1 innings. Bobby Thigpen relieved after Tommy Herr’s run-scoring double with none out in the ninth. Thigpen allowed a two-run single to Kirby Puckett but finished up for his 10th save.

Baltimore 4, Detroit 3--Eddie Murray drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning, as the Orioles defeated the Tigers at Baltimore.

With one out in the eighth, Billy Ripken doubled against Frank Tanana (8-4) and Cal Ripken walked. Murray then doubled down the left-field line. Doug Sisk (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings.

Murray had tied the score with a homer in the sixth, his fifth of the year and his first as a right-handed hitter since Sept. 12 of last season.

Murray’s run-scoring single in the first gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead. Alan Trammell, who had two singles and a home run, scored in the second on the first of Chet Lemon’s three singles.

Mickey Tettleton’s third homer gave Baltimore a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but Trammell put the Tigers ahead in the sixth with a two-run homer, his eighth.

Cleveland 5, Toronto 3--Scott Bailes allowed no hits for 6 innings, and Cory Snyder hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Indians to the win at Cleveland.

Bailes (6-4) had allowed only three runners to reach base before Kelly Gruber lined a single to right field. Bailes ended up with a three-hitter, walking one and striking out two. All three Toronto runs were unearned.

Pinch-hitter Carmen Castillo led off the ninth with an infield single against David Wells (3-3), and Snyder followed with his 12th home run to left.

Cleveland had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on Andy Allanson’s third home run and added a pair of runs in the fourth. Toronto tied the score in the seventh.

Seattle 5, Milwaukee 4--Mickey Brantley drew a bases-loaded walk from Mark Clear with two out in the ninth inning to give the Mariners the win at Seattle.

Pinch-hitter David Valle singled with one out off Paul Mirabella (0-1) and took second on Rey Quinones’ ground out. Harold Reynolds was walked intentionally and Clear relieved. The right-hander threw eight straight balls--four to Henry Cotto and four to Brantley--to score Valle and end the game.
