Maddux, who was 6-14 with a 5.61 earned-run average last season, tied Greg Swindell of the Cleveland Indians for the major league lead in victories.

After taking over for Pat Perry, Rich (Goose) Gossage got the last three outs for his seventh save.

St. Louis 4, New York 1--Willie McGee collected three hits and three RBIs, and John Tudor won his first game since May 1 as the Cardinals to the win at St. Louis.

Tudor (2-1) whose earned-run average rose to 1.03, pitched 6 innings. Ken Dayley pitched a hitless 2 innings for his third save.

The Cardinals broke through against Cone to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Vince Coleman’s baserunning seemed to rattle the Mets’ starter.

Coleman drew a one-out walk. He stole second, and then third. Ozzie Smith walked and stole second before McGee sent a two-run double to right-center.

St. Louis added two runs in the fifth. Coleman stroked a one-out double, went to third on Smith’s sacrifice and scored on McGee’s infield hit.

After McGee stole second, Tom Brunansky was walked intentionally and pulled off a two-out, double steal with McGee. Jose Oquendo was walked intentionally to load the bases before Tony Pena drew a walk, forcing in a run.

San Franciso 5, Atlanta 0--Kelly Downs pitched a two-hitter, facing the minimum of 27 batters at San Francisco.

Ken Oberkfell got a one-out single in the fourth inning and was out stealing. Ozzie Virgil grounded into a double play after Dion James singled in the fifth.
