‘A Penny Isn’t Enough’
Your editorial on California’s bottle bill (“A Penny Isn’t Enough,” May 19) struck a very positive chord with me. Having spent four years in Massachusetts between 1983-1987, I can say with certainty that everyone I knew saved their bottles and cans. Being charged an extra nickel on each container encouraged all of us to save them and to return them to the store for a nickel refund. It was as if we received a reward for returning them.
Remember the kids in the ‘50s and ‘60s scrounging around the beach trash cans looking for refundable bottles? Let’s make it worthwhile for people to save. A nickel is a great start.
