Local News in Brief : Sewer Decision on Hold

Share

The Local Agency Formation Commission on Wednesday delayed a decision on whether to grant Los Angeles County jurisdiction over sewers in Malibu if the coastal community becomes a city.

The panel last month authorized a vote by Malibu residents on cityhood but received a request from county supervisors last week that they retain control over all assessment districts in the area. The supervisors said they are concerned that a Malibu city council might block the county’s plans to build sewers in the beachside area.

Commissioners put off their decision until July 13 to give property owners within the proposed 21-mile boundary for the new city time to file formal requests asking LAFCO to rescind its approval of a cityhood vote.

Members of the Malibu Committee for Incorporation said they were worried that LAFCO’s deliberations could jeopardize their chance of getting the cityhood measure on the November ballot. The timing of the vote will be set by county supervisors.
