Television producer David L. Wolper, chosen unanimously Thursday as the new chairman of the foundation responsible for distributing surplus funds from the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, said he hopes the foundation will win local and national respect with a new series of large, innovative programs to assist youth sports in Southern California.

“We have this enormous ($90 million) fund,” he said. “And with our new Ziffren Sports Resource Center opening in August, we can become a center of information for the whole sports world.”

Wolper invited youth to call the foundation’s new toll-free line, 800-LA SPORTS, to get direct information about foundation-funded summer swim and other athletic programs at 92 swimming pools and 40 recreation centers throughout the Los Angeles area.
