Glasnost in Irvine: Varied Views of the Soviet Union

Share

In your article “Four Soviets Bring a Bit of Glasnost to Irvine” (June 3), you made a geographic goof. You wrote that Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, which is in the Ukraine. Lithuania is not in the Ukraine. Both are republics.

It seems like another handful of Soviets is spread all over the country. We’re still recovering from the last bunch. Why doesn’t the Center for U.S./U.S.S.R. Initiatives initiate some strong words on behalf of all the political prisoners dying daily in Soviet labor camps while we entertain those who put them there?

How about having the Irvine organizing committee for the “Soviets, Meet Middle America!” program call the Soviets on their act and bring some much-needed peace to prisoners of conscience.
