E.W. Carter Honored with ‘Spirit’ Award

Edward W. Carter, chairman emeritus of Carter Hawley Hale Stores Inc. and a founding president of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, has been awarded the “Spirit of Los Angeles” award by the Los Angeles Headquarters City Assn.

Mayor Tom Bradley cited Carter’s efforts in raising more than $50 million for the art museum at last week’s 27th annual luncheon at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Carter also has served as a regent of the University of California.

Walt Disney’s widow, Lillian B. Disney, was presented with the association’s cultural award for her gift of $50 million to fund a new concert hall for the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Music Center. The headquarters city association’s community award was given to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses in honor of its upcoming centennial celebration.

John Whitaker, association president, reported a 20% increase in memberships in the organization that aims to foster balanced commercial and industrial development with special emphasis on headquarters location.
