American art is on public display in Ethiopia for the first time since its Marxist government became a staunch ally of the Soviet Union 11 years ago. American charge d’affaires James Cheek opened the exhibit, “U.S.A. Printworks: Selections From the Brandywine Workshop Collections,” over the weekend at the City Hall Cultural Center in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Cheek said the eight-day show came to Ethiopia after traveling extensively throughout other parts of Africa, Latin American and Asia. The Brandywine Workshop was opened in Philadelphia in 1972 by printer Allan Edmonds to provide access to sophisticated printing techniques for artists.
