About 25 protesters gathered outside the county Hall of Administration Tuesday morning, ready to tell the Board of Supervisors not to build a jail near Anaheim Hills.

But after parading outside for nearly half an hour, the Taxpayers for a Centralized Jail group went into the board chambers--to find that the meeting was over. But the supervisors decided to listen.

A June 15 story in The Times on a protest about the proposed Gypsum Canyon jail indicated that protest leader Dr. Howard Garber and his group oppose a jail near their homes. In fact, Garber says, his group is opposed to jail construction in all residential areas.

Dr. Howard Garber said the group does not want dangerous criminals kept near their homes: “We don’t want them traveling through our neighborhood.”

Co-chairman Rick Violett said members have collected 40,000 signatures of about 66,000 needed to qualify an initiative to require that future jails be built in Santa Ana.
