Azusa : Quarry Hearing Continued

Share

The Planning Commission has continued its hearing on the possible revocation of the Azusa Rock Co. permit to mine Fish Canyon above Azusa and Duarte until July 6, after a marathon, five-hour public hearing last week.

Previously, Azusa’s planning staff had concluded that the quarry is a public nuisance and had violated the conditions of its 32-year-old use permit, justifying revoking the permit.

At the hearing, Azusa Rock’s lawyer presented lengthy testimony, including a report from an air quality expert that the quarry is not violating pollution standards. Residents of Azusa and Duarte, and representatives from the city of Duarte, testified against the quarry’s continued operation.

Community Development Director Roy E. Bruckner said staff will review the testimony and exhibits and make a recommendation at the July meeting. He said another lengthy debate on the issue is likely.
