Local News in Brief : Fund Established to Repair Pier
The Redondo Beach City Council established a fund this week for donations to help rebuild the horseshoe-shaped section of the city pier that was ravaged by fire last month.
City officials plan to solicit contributions, possibly through fund-raising events, sales of merchandise or appeals by mail to residents and businesses.
The fire destroyed a 500-foot section of the pier and 15 businesses, and City Manager Tim Casey estimated that rebuilding will cost between $5 million and $6 million. Sections of the Redondo Beach Pier were damaged by a storm in January and wind-swept waves in April and May.
Tax-deductible contributions can be sent to: Redondo Beach City Hall; P.O. Box 270; Redondo Beach, Calif. 90277. Checks should be made payable to the City of Redondo Beach, Pier Reconstruction Fund.
