Hilton Hotels Corp. asked a judge to set aside $8 million of the $13.5 million that Michael Spinks will earn in his fight with heavyweight champion Mike Tyson for allegedly breaking a contract to have the fight at the hotel chain’s Las Vegas resort.
A Nevada judge set a hearing for Tuesday on the motion by the hotel chain for an injunction against Spinks and his manager, Butch Lewis, pending a trial on July 25 of Hilton’s suit against Spinks and Lewis.
Hilton contends that it lost $8 million when Spinks withdrew from a heavyweight unification series that ended with Tyson unifying the title last August by defeating little-known Tony Tucker instead of Spinks.
Spinks and Tyson are scheduled to fight June 27 at Atlantic City, N.J., in what could be boxing’s richest bout.
