Jackson, Dukakis and the Democrats

Larry Gelbart’s column “Dukakis: Promise, Not Just Promises” (Op-Ed Page, June 3) is fundamentally flawed because his premise that “the two subjects dearest to California are education and environment” is wrong. He failed to mention the “dearest” subject, and of course that is the economy which means jobs, inflation and interest rates.
The critical issue on voters’ minds is keeping the Reagan expansion going: inflation at 3-4%, unemployment at its lowest in over 10 years at 5.5%, and real interest rates below 10%. I suggest Bush is more capable to continue the fine work on this No. 1 issue.
