BASEBALL MISCELLANY : NAMES AND NUMBERS

Share

Peter Ueberroth: Before announcing his decision not to seek a second term as commissioner, Ueberroth discussed with some of the 26 owners the possibility of a 3-year, $3-million extension that would include a profit-sharing or incentive package. The suggestion obviously drew a negative response.

Lee Thomas: The personnel director of the St. Louis Cardinals and a former player with the Angels is expected to be named general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, replacing the recently fired Woody Woodward.

The Angels: Who said they’re not closing ground? The Baltimore Orioles merely lost their first 21 games. Now the Angels have an excellent chance of surpassing them in games lost, the ultimate embarrassment for an organization that displayed an embarrassing 27-year percentage of .483 even before this year began.

Bird Feed: The Orioles have been shut out in 7 of Mike Boddicker’s last 19 starts; Larry Sheets, who hit 31 homers last year, has 1 in his last 49 games, and Fred Lynn had been up with 70 runners in scoring position through Friday and driven in just 7.

Rick Reuschel: Now 10-3 with a five-game winning streak, Reuschel is 15-6 in 22 starts with the San Francisco Giants. He would seem to be a certain member of the National League’s All-Star pitching staff but is tentatively scheduled to be married over the July break and may reject the All-Star invitation.

Twin Relief: Jeff Reardon and Juan Berenguer have spurred the Minnesota Twins’ re-entry into the American League West race. Reardon converted his last 12 save opportunities through Friday, putting together 14 consecutive scoreless innings. Berenguer struck out 25 batters in his last 18 innings and led the league in strikeouts per inning with 61 in 48 innings.

Greg Gagne: The Twins’ shortstop has been another factor in his team’s comeback. He was hitting .182 with 42 strikeouts in 132 at-bats May 28. He began a weekend series with the Seattle Mariners having hit .426 in 17 ensuing games and in that time had struck out only 10 times.

Mark Langston: The Mariner pitcher whose remarks may have led to Dick Williams’ firing and who was called gutless by the departing Williams is 0-2 for interim manager Jimmy Snyder, having allowed 17 hits and 10 earned runs in 8 innings.

No-Hitters: Six pitchers have lost no-hitters in the ninth inning this year, with Mike Schmidt, Wallace Johnson, Randy Ready, Tony Gwynn, Ken Oberkfell and Ron Washington getting the hits. Those six were hitting a cumulative .251 through Thursday.
