Fragments of what appear to be an F/A-18 Hornet jet missing from Lemoore Naval Air Station with two pilots aboard since May 20, 1987, were discovered by a ground team in the rugged Hoover Wilderness Area of the Sierra in Mono County. “They’ve just found some pieces at the bottom of an almost vertical cliff,” base spokesman Dennis McGrath said. “They found pieces of gray, honeycombed, stringy, fiberglass-like material that looks like a Hornet.” McGrath said the largest piece was less than six inches long. Believed killed in the crash were Navy Capt. Daniel Ginsberg and Marine Lt. Michael Mueller, who were on a training mission. Ginsberg’s wife, Marilyn, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the crash.
