Franklin Stubbs and Kirk Gibson homered on consecutive pitches in the fourth inning Sunday and Orel Hershiser pitched a seven-hitter to power the Dodgers to a 12-2 rout of the San Diego Padres in the first game of a double-header at Dodger Stadium.

Rick Dempsey added a solo homer, a run-scoring double, and a sacrifice fly for the Dodgers. Mike Davis contributed a two-run pinch-hit homer. It was the first time hit four home runs in a game since April 17, 1987, at San Diego.

Hershiser, backed by a 15-hit attack, coasted to his 10th victory in 13 decisions. He struck out three and walked two in completing his fifth game in 14 starts.

The Dodgers tagged starter Jimmy Jones (5-6) for the first nine runs on 11 hits in his four-plus innings. Jones entered the game with a lifetime 4-0 record against the Dodgers.

Mike Marshall’s first triple in three seasons knocked in the first two of four Dodger runs in the first inning. Jeff Hamiltom singled home Marshall and Dempsey added a sacrifice fly.

After the Padres scored in the fourth on Keith Moreland’s RBI double, the Dodgers scored three times in the fourth to make it 7-1. After Dave Anderson singled to open the inning, Stubbs cracked a two-out homer over the center-field wall. Gibson hit the next pitch over the left-field wall for his 14th home run.

The Dodgers chased Jones when he yielded four consecutive hits to open the fifth inning. Dempsey doubled in the first run and Anderson singled home the second to make it 9-1.

Davis hit his first homer as a Dodger, a two-run shot, in the sixth off Greg Booker. Booker also surrendered Dempsey’s lead-off homer in the seventh for the final Dodger run.

The Padres got their second run in the ninth when Tim Flannery hit a sacrifice fly.
