Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : $211-Million Budget for 1988-89 Wins Approval
The City Council adopted a $211-million budget Monday for fiscal year 1988-89 that is directed at strengthening police and fire services while cutting spending for nonessential items.
The $92.2 million, general-fund portion of the budget is down 1.4% from the current year’s $93.3 million outlay. The Office of Community Events, along with funding for Toys on Parade and the city’s Rose Parade float, have been eliminated, and 69 management, administrative and support positions have been cut.
The Police Department, however, received money for 10 new officers, while the Fire Department will get eight new firefighters. Altogether, the two departments will account for more than 58% of the city’s general-fund spending.
The budget for the Community Development Agency--which oversees the city’s redevelopment projects, federal block grants and housing programs--is the largest of the items outside the general fund, at $73,900,985.
