Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Impact Study Ordered for Town Center Plan

Share

A 21-story office tower and a large luxury hotel may be coming to the South Coast Plaza Town Center development planned by C.J. Segerstrom & Sons as a result of a City Council decision Monday night to begin the process of allowing more building on the site.

The 4-1 vote directed city staff members to begin an environmental impact study of the proposed tower and hotel in north Costa Mesa. Public hearings on the proposal could begin as soon as late this summer, city officials said.

Councilman David Wheeler opposed the motion, calling the move premature and adding that the company had not satisfied the city’s requirements for such an action.

The requested expansion of Town Center--now a cluster of office buildings, restaurants and theaters across Bristol Street from South Coast Plaza--would bring the total square footage of the entire project to 3.2 million square feet.

The city’s zoning now permits no more than 3 million square feet of development at Town Center.

Monday’s action by the council would amend the city’s plan to allow the tower and hotel to be built.
