MANILA —
A strong earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale shook the central Philippine island of Mindoro before dawn Monday, injuring at least four people and damaging many buildings, officials and witnesses said.
A local radio station said a 63-year-old male resident of the Mindoro town of San Jose, apparently the hardest-hit area, died after suffering a heart attack. Officials said the center of the earthquake was about 12 miles beneath the sea about 37 miles southwest of San Jose.
