IWRITE THE SONGS: North County singer-songwriter Jack Tempchin has never cared much for the spotlight. Except for a brief fling on the road in 1976 with his own band, the Funky Kings, he’s spent most of the past 15 years writing hit songs for the Eagles (“Already Gone”) and, later, ex-Eagle Glenn Frey (“You Belong to the City”).

Last year, however, Tempchin put together a new band, the Seclusions, and vowed to give the spotlight another try. And for a while, he did try, playing once or twice a month at the Belly Up Tavern.

But, last Wednesday night at the Belly Up, the Seclusions were rocking away on stage while their leader was milling about the crowd in a three-piece suit. When one fan asked him why he wasn’t performing, Tempchin cheekily replied, “I don’t wanna.”
