The North Carolina city of Durham will be the site of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, reportedly the world’s first music conservatory devoted exclusively to jazz. The institute--named for the legendary be-bop pioneer and Rocky Mount, N.C., native--will offer a practical and theoretical music curriculum taught by leading jazz educators and musicians. The $12-million facility will “create an educational, cultural and performance-based environment for young developing jazz musicians,” said Thomas Carter, executive director of the institute, which will be affiliated with Durham’s Duke University.
