Cypress College biology instructor Bob Harkrider has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship--the first in the community college’s history.

Harkrider, 42, who has been at Cypress College the past 12 years, will fly to Washington on Tuesday to meet with other Fulbright scholars scheduled to study and teach in Africa. Harkrider will teach courses in zoology, including animal physiology, at Fourah Bay College in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from September, 1988, through June, 1989.

The Fulbright Fellowship provides Harkrider with a $25,000 grant for his year of teaching, plus $4,000 for transportation to and from Africa.

“He anticipates quite a contrast between the 13,000-student Cypress College campus and the Fourah Bay campus that reportedly has about 2,000 students enrolled,” said Rosemary James, a college spokeswoman.

In addition to teaching, Harkrider will study the natural history of the Sierra Leone region and the distribution of birds and animals.
