Local News in Brief : Stalker Judge Challenged
The June 30 trial of Night Stalker defendant Richard Ramirez was indefinitely delayed Tuesday after his lawyers filed a motion seeking a new trial judge.
Ramirez’s lawyers said it had become “increasingly obvious” that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael A. Tynan no longer is capable of “being impartial” in the case. As an example, attorneys Daniel and Arturo Hernandez cited Tynan’s order that they be searched before entering the holding cell to visit their client.
Tynan has 10 days to respond, and then another Superior Court judge will be appointed to hear the challenge. In Los Angeles, Ramirez faces 13 first-degree murder counts, plus 36 other felony counts arising from a crime spree in the mid-1980s.
