Compton : Trash Rate Increased 8%

Share

On a 4-1 vote Tuesday night, the Compton City Council agreed to raise residential trash collection rates from $9.65 a month to $10.46. The only vote against the increase was cast by Councilman Maxcy Filer.

It took five public hearings before the council agreed to raise the rates, although not to the level requested by the city’s trash hauler, Murcole Inc. The firm was pressing for a rate increase of 13%, which would have upped the monthly residential cost to $10.96.

City staff members, after investigating trash hauling costs in other cities, recommended the 8% hike that the council agreed to Tuesday night. Compton’s trash collection rates are higher than those in neighboring communities, largely because the city’s trash must be hauled to Puente Hills in the San Gabriel Valley.

Compared to Compton’s new monthly rate, Carson’s rate is $9.27, Paramount’s $6.10 and Lynwood’s $8.02.
