U.S. Atty. Peter K. Nunez said Thursday that his office will review the San Diego County district attorney’s report on the shooting death of Tommie C. Dubose to see whether a federal investigation is warranted.

The report, released this week, said police were justified in shooting Dubose, 56, in the living room of his East San Diego home, but it criticized officers for not properly announcing themselves before entering.

Minority community leaders have requested a federal investigation because of unresolved questions about the incident.

“We’re reviewing the D.A.’s report, plain and simple,” Nunez said. “We haven’t opened an investigation. No person or group has contacted us.”

He said his office has been monitoring the case and will study the report to determine whether there are indictions that Dubose’s civil rights were violated.
