1,500 Victory Gives Farmer Junior Title

Matt Farmer, a Monte Vista High graduate, won the 1,500-meter run, the final event, to take first in the decathlon at the 17th U.S. Junior Track and Field Championships Friday at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Farmer, 19, a freshman at UC Irvine, led Phillipe Williams by 195 points at the end of the first five events Thursday, setting a meet record with 3,836 points in the opening day.

But Williams was within 21 points of the lead after nine events. Farmer defeated Williams by running 4:40.80 in the 1,500. It was the only event he won Friday.

Both Farmer and Williams qualified for the World Junior Championships, to be held July 26-31 at Sudbury, Canada.

BASKETBALL

Brian Mulligan, assistant basketball coach at Capistrano Valley High School for the past three seasons, has been named varsity coach at Orange Glen, replacing Dana Ernest.

Mulligan, 27, was a varsity assistant under Mark Thornton and freshman coach at Capistrano Valley after he graduated from UC Irvine, where his father, Bill, is the head coach.

Last season, Orange Glen finished 0-12 in the Palomar League and was 5-19 overall.

VOLLEYBALL

The San Diego Volleyball Club lost its final two matches in pool play and will play Italy for fifth place today in the International Volleyball Challenge at Notre Dame.

Cal Juniors of El Toro defeated SDVC, 15-7, 15-8, 15-8, and Sports Performance of Chicago won, 15-5, 15-2, 9-15, 15-8. In the second match for SDVC, Alicia Turner had 14 kills, and Angel Leath had 9 kills and 8 blocks.

SDVC was 2-2 in pool play and in third place out of five teams. Italy was winless in the international bracket.

FISHING

The seventh San Diego County Parks Society bass fishing tournament is set for July 9 at Lake Morena County Park. Entrants will compete for a top prize of $400, and all tournament entrants will be entered in prize drawings.

The entry fee for the event is $50 per two-person team and includes fishing permits and launch fees for Lake Morena. Entries may be made by mail to the Parks Society, P.O. Box 957, Bonita 92002-0830, or at the lake between 6 and 9 p.m. July 8. No registrations will be accepted on the day of the tournament.

BASEBALL

The Tecolote Youth Baseball League will host a three-game series against a team from Manly, Australia, beginning at 4:30 today at the Tecolote Pony Field east of Morena Boulevard on Tecolote Road.

The teams will play at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 p.m. Monday. It will be the first stop on a California tour for the Australian team.
