Queen Anne has teamed with Michael Gage, Los Angeles’ deputy mayor, but it’s fine with Gage’s wife, Lacey.
Why? Because the Gages both fell in love with “the old lady,” really a three-story Victorian--if you count the attic.
The Gages wanted to live closer to downtown, so they sold their Hancock Park home and moved into an apartment while looking at houses to buy with the help of Joan Duffy of Mike Glickman’s Brentwood office. Finally, Duffy showed the Gages the Queen Anne, which was listed with Alan Bergman of The Victorian Register.
As ardent preservationists, the Gages couldn’t resist. They bought the place from Louis and Nora Peters of Tujunga for about $515,000.
The house is a Los Angeles landmark, and it is also on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in the late 1880s, it sits atop a hill on half an acre in Highland Park. It has four bedrooms, three baths and maids’ quarters.
And guess what else? It has a view of City Hall!
Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck expected to close the deal as long ago as March, but he finally signed the papers last week, and now his Malibu restaurant, “Granita” (an iced coffee drink), is more of a reality.
Puck’s wife, decorator Barbara Lazaroff, plans to design the place like Spago, their chic West Hollywood restaurant. And it’s expected to open next spring in the Malibu Colony Plaza shopping center, which is being built between Malibu Road and Pacific Coast Highway, down the street from that star haven, Malibu Colony.
Stan Herman Associates handled the 15-year lease, with Jim Nichols representing Roy Crummer, the developer, and Stephen Shapiro representing Puck. (Shapiro just put his own money where the hamburgers are--as an investor in Peter Morton’s eighth Hard Rock Cafe, to open just after the first of the year in Sidney, Australia.)
No dollar figures were announced, but industry sources estimate the value of Puck’s lease--for 6,500 square feet of restaurant space and a 3,000-square-foot patio--at more than $2.5 million.
Before we leave Malibu Colony, the word is that entertainer Pia Zadora and her multimillionaire husband, Meshulam Riklis, who already own a beach house near actor Larry Hagman’s, just added another house in the Colony to their collection and have been negotiating to buy yet another, next door.
Their plans? A neighbor figures they will demolish the houses on the adjacent lots and build one large home with a pool and 90 feet of beach frontage.
Hawaii beckons, with many Southland children getting out of school for the summer last week, and the latest news from the Big Island is that the second phase of Kohala Ranch, 154 three-acre fee-simple home sites in the 4,000-acre equestrian community, will begin Wednesday at prices from $164,000.
Yes, the Japanese are buying there, too.
The famous Japanese jockey Tsuruo Kimura just bought a model home for $1 million.
Kenny Rogers sold his office building on Sunset some time ago but retained some space on a lease, and now, the popular singer has subleased 3,534 square feet of it (through his Kenny Rogers Productions) to Desk K Inc., which represents HK Films, one of Japan’s largest film producers. Susan Loranger and Don Ferris of L.J. Hooker International represented the lessee in negotiating the four-year, $500,000 deal.
