Racing at Hollywood Park : Trainer Jacque Fulton Wins With Clean Lines

Longshot Clean Lines took the lead for good entering the backstretch and went on to a 2 3/4-length victory over Flying Countess Saturday in the $98,150 Princess Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Hollywood Park.

Jacque Fulton became the first woman trainer to send out a winner in the 23-year history of the Princess Stakes. Clean Lines’ stablemate, Super Avie, finished third.

Ridden by Frank Olivares, Clean Lines paid $51.20, $13.40 and $7.20, and was timed in 1:43 3/5 for the 1 1/16 miles.

Clean Lines, in the first added-money victory of her career, won $62,150 to bring her career earnings to $109,125. It was the fourth victory in 10 starts for Clean Lines, who was claimed by Fulton on behalf of owner Tony Busching for $40,000 last fall.

Flying Countess, with Eddie Delahoussaye up, paid $5 and $4.40. Super Avie, ridden by Laffit Pincay, was six lengths back and paid $4.60.

Alysheba and Ferdinand will race against each other for the fourth time in less than eight months today in the $500,000-guaranteed Hollywood Gold Cup.

Alysheba, to be ridden by Chris McCarron and top-weighted at 126 pounds, is installed as a 7-5 morning-line favorite. Ferdinand, 125, with Bill Shoemaker aboard, is 9-5 to successfully defend his Gold Cup title and even his rivalry with Alysheba at two victories.

Cutlass Reality, winner of the Californian June 12, is the third choice at 5-1.
