Gang shootings killed three and wounded more than a dozen people in the Los Angeles area during another weekend of street violence that has left more than 150 people dead this year, authorities said.
One man was killed in a drive-by shooting and two others wounded in the South-Central area Sunday night. Another man was killed and two wounded by shotgun fire from a passing car near Griffith Park. The deaths came after another man died in a gang-related attack Friday.
In Huntington Park on Sunday, anti-gang police exchanged gunfire with a double-murder suspect outside a home that was under surveillance.
The suspect, Jose Correa, 22, of Los Angeles ran out the back door of the home shortly after 3 a.m. and opened fire on the officers, who shot back, Sgt. Mike Leinen said.
Correa was cornered under a house a block away by a police dog about 90 minutes later, Leinen said. Correa, a suspect in two recent gang-related slayings, was taken to County-USC Medical Center for treatment of dog bites, Leinen said.
None of the officers was injured.
