Carl Lewis overcame his usual slow start and won the 100-meter dash in a wind-aided 9.95 seconds Monday night in an international track and field meet at Villeneuve D’ascq, France. Canadian Ben Johnson holds the world record of 9.83, set during the World Championships at Rome last summer, when he beat Lewis, who was second in 9.93.

Johnson was scheduled to race Lewis at this meet in the first of a big-money series leading up to the Seoul Olympics. But Johnson suffered a torn left hamstring in a meet at Tokyo last month and will be sidelined until August.

Larry Myricks had the year’s best long jump. With an allowable wind of 1.7 m.p.h., he jumped 27 feet 11 inches. Lewis jumped 27-7 1/2 at the Lausanne, Switzerland, meet Friday.
