New Jersey’s popular Gov. Thomas H. Kean, known for his call to bring women and minorities into the GOP mainstream, said today that he will deliver the keynote speech at the Republican National Convention.

“The Republican Party, if it’s going to be successful, has to appeal to everybody,” Kean said. “That’s the message” he said he will present to GOP delegates Aug. 15 in New Orleans. Kean, 53, was picked to give the high-profile speech by Vice President George Bush. The Democrats, whose convention is next month in Atlanta, announced the selection of their keynote speaker, Texas state Treasurer Ann Richards, on Monday.
