Bellflower : Eviction Protection Ordinance Put on Council Agenda
A 30-year-old woman who claims she is “being unfairly evicted” from her Bellflower apartment convinced the City Council to put an eviction protection ordinance on the council agenda for consideration.
Sandra Meeham, a tenant of former Bellflower Mayor Maurice G. (Mike) Brassard, is being evicted because she witnessed a court document for a friend. The friend, a fellow tenant of the apartment complex on Rose Street, is being evicted by Brassard for non-payment of rent.
“I’m being forced out of my home by your former mayor,” Meeham told the City Council on Monday night as she petitioned for “some kind of ruling for justification of eviction.”
Later, Councilman Joseph E. Cvetko called for the eviction protection ordinance to be drawn up by city staff members for consideration at the next council meeting. “Landlords should not throw people out on a whim,” Cvetko said.
Despite strong objections to the proposed ordinance by Mayor Kenneth J. Cleveland, the ordinance should appear on the agenda, city spokesman Nelson E. Oliva said.
