A small fire was contained by a sprinkler system in an Irvine cabinet shop early Wednesday morning, limiting damage to $4,500, a county Fire Department spokesman said.

Fire investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire, which apparently began near a work bench at Sea Pointe Construction & Development Inc., 15801 Rockfield Blvd., around 1:45 a.m., said county fire Capt. Patrick McIntosh .

An internal alarm system notified the Fire Department, and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which was under control by the company’s sprinkler system, McIntosh said.

“The damage would have been extensive if there was no sprinkler system, especially in the middle of the night like that,” McIntosh said.
