Santa Monica : Council Extends Peddling Ban
The City Council voted 6 to 2 Tuesday to extend a temporary ban on street vending and peddling in Santa Monica until Dec. 31, despite an opinion from City Atty. Robert M. Myers that the interim ordinance denies some local vendors the means of earning a living.
Myers, who prepared the ordinance, recommended that the council allow individuals to apply for vending permits under the city’s existing laws until a new set of vending regulations is adopted.
The temporary ban, originally approved by the council in early January, was enacted to suspend vending in Santa Monica until a new, more comprehensive set of vending restrictions could be created and approved.
Preparation of new vending regulations would take about 90 days to complete, said City Manager John Jalili.
“This is class legislation. It cuts people off. It’s antisocial in nature and it’s an outrage,” said Councilman David Finkel, who along with Dennis Zane voted against the measure.
