HIGH LIFE : Irvine High Wins Top Award for ‘Camelot’
“Camelot,” a production of the Irvine High School drama department, was recently named the area’s “most spectacular musical” by the Musical and Art Commendation for Youth group, a nonprofit organization.
More than 20 Orange County high schools entered the 18th annual MACY competition. Judges attended productions at each competing school during the year and then voted on the winners, who received their awards at Santa Ana High School.

In addition to other awards listed in last Saturday’s “Hot, Hip & Happening” column, Mater Dei High School’s production of “The Music Man” received the MACY trophy for the “best musical” of Orange County by the Musical and Art Commendation for Youth group at its 18th annual competition. Mater Dei’s production was directed by John Merino.
Other group awards went to the casts of Mater Dei’s “The Music Man” and University’s “Evita,” which tied for first for “best ensemble production,” and San Clemente’s “Pajama Game,” which was third.
Mater Dei also won the “best orchestra award,” with Fountain Valley second and Canyon third.
Individual award winners included: Chris Cooke (Canyon) and Paul Haggerty (El Dorado), who tied for best actor; Brooke Wilkes (El Dorado), best actress; Jeff Weeks (Canyon), best supporting actor; Debbie Tillotson (Woodbridge), best supporting actress, and Chris Marritt (Irvine), best character actor.
