A 51-year-old Garden Grove woman died after suffering breathing problems--possibly an acute asthma attack--after a car collision in Anaheim on Friday morning, police said.

Anaheim police said Barbara Jean Elmquist died at 9:05 a.m. at UCI Medical Center in Orange, about an hour after her car was struck as she was exiting the northbound Orange Freeway at Lincoln Avenue.

Kenneth Floyd Stinson, 28, of Riverside was arrested at the scene on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and possession of a dangerous drug, Anaheim police said. He was being held in the city jail in lieu of $35,000 bail, police said.

Anaheim police said witnesses reported that the car that struck Elmquist’s was being driven erratically and was eastbound on Lincoln Avenue.

The Orange County coroner’s office said that after the accident Elmquist had trouble breathing, and witnesses described it as a possible asthma attack. Paramedics treated her at the scene. She was taken to UCI Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, the coroner’s office said.

An autopsy, which may establish the precise cause of death, is scheduled today, the coroner’s office said.
