A man was shot in the hand by police Friday morning during a search for drugs in a house in Clairemont.

Police said Joseph Uriarite was shot after he made a furtive gesture to reach a closet in a back bedroom of his home in the 3700 block of Mt. Acadia Boulevard. He was treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for the injury.

Sgt. James Pennington said the officers knocked on the front door of the home about 8:20 a.m. When there was no response after about 30 seconds, the officers forced their way inside.

He said Officer Carlos Medina shot Uriarite after it appeared he was trying to get something out of the closet.

Pennington said no charges had been filed, but that Uriarite and another resident, Mike Rhinestein, both in their 20s, were under investigation in connection with a variety of offenses. Pennington said police found an eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine at the house, along with a stolen car and a stolen motorcycle.
