Aggie Grey; South Pacific Hotel Owner

Aggie Grey, 90, often described as the South Pacific’s last living legend. Her hotel in Apia, the capital of Western Samoa, is one of the region’s most famous tourist haunts. Grey, daughter of a Yorkshire ship’s doctor, fell in love with the then-German colony during a visit, married a young Samoan, and opened a bar in the 1930s. Queen Elizabeth awarded her the Queen’s Service Medal in 1983, the first Samoan to receive the honor. In Apia on Monday.
