Balloting Demonstrates a Shortage of Talent

When major league baseball teams numbered 16, each team had several players of very borderline talent. Now there are 26 so-called major league teams.
The shortage of talent is aptly demonstrated by the 219,484 All-Star votes (good for eighth place) received by Baltimore’s Billy Ripken at second base. He’s batting .186, with 1 home run and 14 runs batted in. What could be worse? Willie Randolph, batting .205 with 406,267 votes, enough for third place at the same position.
