Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears, who hasn’t won on a road course since 1982, took the early lead for the pole position for Sunday’s Cleveland Grand Prix with a speed of 136.054 m.p.h. in the first of two qualifying sessions. Mears’ speed was a fraction off the record qualifying speed of 136.287 m.p.h. set by Roberto Guerrero a year ago.
