Mother Hippo, Defending Baby, Attacks Zoo Keeper

ST. LOUIS —
A St. Louis zoo employee was in stable condition Saturday after being attacked by a mother hippopotamus that apparently was defending its newborn baby, a zoo official said. Rick Coonrod, 47, had surgery for a fractured right leg after the hippo stomped on it and bit his arm, the official said.
