Two Loyola Marymount University students were seriously injured Sunday when their motorcycle struck the back of a car on the Golden State Freeway north of Weldon Canyon Road near Newhall, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The motorcycle driver, Robert Blazer, 19, of Concord, and his passenger, Celia Tello, 19, of Los Angeles, were headed north at about 50 m.p.h. when they struck a gray sedan, flew over the handlebars and landed on the car’s roof and trunk, said Officer Steven Powell.

The car’s driver left the scene of the accident and is wanted on suspicion of felony hit and run, Powell said. When authorities arrived at the scene at 10:30 a.m., Blazer and Tello were lying in the middle of the freeway, he said.

The students, each suffering from a broken pelvis and facial cuts, were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, Powell said.

The CHP closed the freeway for 15 minutes to land a helicopter to pick up the students. Northbound traffic was backed up five miles to the San Diego Freeway junction, Powell said.
